This song had been rollin' around in my mind for a while…I think I wrote most of it in the truck at different times…then, this past spring, I had jane n beau in the backyard with me and while I was writing in my journal and drinkin' a cup of coffee, the rest of the song just fell out…I call it a God n horses thing, guess you could say that God, jane n beau were my co-writers on this one

well she talks about `em
dreams about `em
thinks about `em all the time
she's got to have `em
be lost without `em
you can see it in her eyes
what is it, what is it with girls and horses

she says, (now) when i was a young girl
they were my whole world
they were my one safe place
and now that i'm older
i still lean on their shoulders
still feel like that girl somedays
what is it, what is it with girls and horses

sometimes i wanna give up
throw up my hands and say enough's enough
that's when i go and saddle up
and runaway, `til i'm ok
`til i'm not afraid of stayin' in the game
maybe that's what it is
with girls and horses

well i talk about `em
and i dream about `em
live to love `em
and i love to ride
i'll always have `em
be lost without `em
there's magic in those gentle eyes
what is it, what is it with girls and horses
what is it, what is it with girls and horses

guardian angel

this one was inspired by a trucker we saw drivin' down the highway, i'm thinkin' we were on our way to somewhere in texas…the trucker's rig had “never drive faster you're your guardian angel can fly” written on it…well, bein' the horse crazy cowgirl that i am, i thought, we oughta write “never ride faster…,” took the idea to our “brother” Porter and a song was born

she could've passed for a cowboy
the way she carried herself and that fifty pounds of leather
put it up on that pony, light as a feather
like she'd done it all her life
then she asked if i was ready
handed me the reins and we started out walkin'
up until that mornin' she hadn't been much on talkin'
guess it'd finally come the time
and she said
i've learned more from the back of a horse
than most folks ever get to know
you never really know what you're made of
`til you ride out on your own

ooo baby don't worry
i know you're gonna be just fine
ooo now don't be in a hurry
you'll feel it when you hit your stride
don't get rattled, sit deep in the saddle
remember to hold on tight
and never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly

i remember what she told me
it's as clear as a bell like it was on that mornin'
kind of like a blessing and a warnin'
i've carried all this time
i'll pass it on to my daughter
as she loads up her car and heads out of the driveway
she'll have had enough of doin' things my way
it'll be her turn to fly
and i'll say
i've learned more from the back of a horse
than most folks ever get to know
you never really know what you're made of
`til you ride out on your own

ooo baby don't worry
you know you're gonna be just fine
ooo don't be in a hurry
you'll feel it when you hit your stride
don't get rattled, sit deep in the saddle
remember to hold on tight
and never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly
ooo baby don't worry
you know you're gonna be just fine
ooo don't be in a hurry
you'll feel it when you hit your stride
don't get rattled, sit deep in the saddle
remember to hold on tight
and never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly
don't you ever ride faster than your guardian angel can fly
remember oh remember baby
she coulda passed for a cowboy

cowgirl creed

This one was inspired by a woman and a book she wrote…the gal's name is ellen reid smith and her book's called Cowgirl Smarts (how to rope a kick-ass life), too cool! We met her in ft. worth a while back at a cuttin' horse deal…over the next few weeks I read her book, got inspired and with the help of my hubby, wrote this tune named after a section in her book called the cowgirl creed…check out her book here

she said i can do that it wouldn't take nothin'
but a whole lotta heart, iron will and gumption
i'll just use what the good lord gave me
so don't call me honey and don't call me baby
don't call me baby

i ride high in the saddle
always saddle my own horse
still i'm every inch a lady
from the outside to the core
i take the trail less traveled
`cause i know where it leads
i live my life
by the cowgirl creed

i dream as big as texas work hard and i'm faithful
i never cease to be amazed, dedicated and grateful
i try to be a good hand when a hand's what's needed
and i'll stay that way long as i'm livin' and breathin'
and i'll die with my boots on

i ride high in the saddle
always saddle my own horse
still i'm every inch a lady
from the outside to the core
i take the trail less traveled
`cause i know where it leads
i live my life
by the cowgirl creed

i can hear my heroes on the western wind

say “what's holdin' you back, what's keepin' you in,

runnin' scared, that ain't no way to live,
tear down those fences and ride like the wind”

i think the world looks a lot better
from the back of a good horse
where i can see forever
see just what i'm shootin' for
i love this life that i've been given
i'm right where i'm `s'posed to be
i live my life
by the cowgirl creed

just stay crazy

this song came out of a pretty rough day a while back…sometimes the music biz is tough and these last four years doin' it all on our own have been amazing, but hard at the same time…i had a day where i decided it was just too hard and that i was gonna quit even though this is all i know…i cried a lot of tears that day and then, just like a chicken, next mornin' i woke up in a whole new world, rallied and thought, well, if I'm crazy for doin' what i love for a livin,' then, man, i'll just stay crazy!!

They say the things I'm dreamin' they just can't be done
They walk the line and say that I'm the foolish one
They got this `n that `n the other
But I'll tell you one thing brother
They sure don't look like they're havin' any fun

I think I'll just stay crazy
Think I'll just keep runnin' wild
Long as you're here with me baby
If I go down I go down with a smile
Just stay crazy… I'll just stay crazy

Sometimes it gets scary out here on the edge
There's no safety rail and sure as hell there ain't no net
But I like the view up here
It's wide-open and it's clear
And if you never try then nothin's all you get

So I think I'll just stay crazy
Think I'll just keep runnin' wild
Long as you're here with me baby
If I go down I go down with a smile
Just stay crazy… just stay crazy

Well I play my guitar all night long
And I make my livin' singin' songs
About how the world could get along
If we'd all stick to right and wrong

I like rollin' in the daisies
Yeah and if that makes me crazy, then

I'll just stay crazy
I think I'll just keep runnin' wild
Long as you're here with me baby
If I go down I go down with a smile
Just stay crazy… just stay crazy
Just stay crazy… I'll just stay crazy
Just stay crazy

ride before it rains

well, let's just say i was a bit grumpy one day and sam said, hon, maybe you oughta go ride before it rains (we were supposed to get some good rain later that day)…well, i did go and ride and was a much happier girl for it, but, not before we sat down on our back porch and wrote this tune

you've seen the floods come down
you've felt the lightnin' and heard the thunder
it's not that i don't want you around
but this time i'm not gonna drag you under

i think i better ride before it rains
think i better saddle up my fastest pony
somethin' about these winds of change
is tellin' me i best get goin'
i can feel a storm movin' this way
yeah i think i better ride before it rains

i know you wanna help
i know how much you wanna be there for me
but some things i gotta do myself
i'm not gone for good
please believe me

i think i better ride before it rains
think i better saddle up my fastest pony
somethin' about these winds of change
is tellin' me i best get goin'
i can feel a storm movin' this way
yeah i think i better ride before it rains

before these blue skies turn gray
before i say some things
i wish i didn't say

somethin' about these winds of change
is tellin' me i best get goin'
i can feel a storm movin' this way
yeah i think i better ride before it rains
yeah i think i better ride before it rains

she remembers ridin'

me n sam were thinkin' about a friend of ours who has a family member with Alzheimer's…this song just fell out…i guess we never know, so, i live it like i mean it, everyday, hope you do too

time has a funny way
of takin' some things away
she's not the girl she used to be
i've been here every day
since she's been in this place
and i've watched her slowly slip away
she must've been somethin' in her younger years
that's all she talks about since she's been here

she remembers ridin'
that old gray geldin'
she remembers the wind on her face
and the feel of the reins in her hands
and it's good to see her smilin'
but so hard to keep from cryin'
when i walk in the room
and she doesn't know who i am
she remembers ridin'

she says i gotta go
i got ten head of cows to load
and i've still gotta saddle up big blue
then she calls for her old cow dog
and i let her ramble on
`cause that old dog's been gone since '52
she's livin' out her days in memories
maybe that's better than her reality

she remembers ridin'
that old grey geldin'
she remembers the wind on her face
and the feel of the reins in her hands
and it's good to see her smilin'
but so hard to keep from cryin'
when i walk in the room
and she doesn't know who i am
she remembers ridin'
and it's good to see her smilin'
but so hard to keep from cryin'
when i walk in the room
and she doesn't know who i am
she remembers ridin'
time has a funny way
of takin some things away……

shouldn't we all

Well, we thought about callin' this “the dirty bird song,” since, well, it was inspired by, let's just say, birds feelin' frisky in the springtimeJ it makes me happy…you never know when inspiration's gonna get ya!

early monday mornin'
bluesin' `bout these bills i got to pay
ain't no way
lately luck's been such a stranger
hard times just keep rainin' down on me
poor, poor me
i look outside the window
the world seems so alive
all of god's creations
out there soakin' up the sunshine

yeah the birds are doin' it
all up in the trees
they sing their little hearts out
baby why can't we
be makin' love, makin' hay
enjoyin' the ride every day
ain't sweatin' a thing
just havin' a ball
shouldn't we all
hay, shouldn't we all

that fight we had last evenin'
is still ringin' up and down inside these walls
still hangin' on
like the tension in between us
since when does winnin' matter more than love
more than us
just look outside the window
the world looks so alive
all of god's creations
out there soakin' up the sunshine

yeah the birds are doin' it
all up in the trees
yeah they sing their little hearts out
baby why can't we
be makin' love, makin' hay
enjoyin' the ride every day
ain't sweatin' a thing
just havin' a ball
shouldn't we all

lighten up just a little
(shouldn't we all)
just wing it sometimes
(shouldn't we all)
be light as a feather
and learn to fly

'cause the birds are doin' it
all up in the trees
they sing their little hearts out
baby why can't you and me
be makin' love, makin' hay
enjoyin' the ride every day
ain't sweatin' a thing baby
just havin' a ball
shouldn't we all
hay, shouldn't we all
shouldn't we all
`cause the birds are doin' it

beautiful day

Sam and I were takin' a walk one day down our beautiful country lane…we saw a bluebird sittin' on a rusty strand of barbed wire…sam said he'd like to paint that picture someday…we started writin' it while we walked, so it's got a walkin' kinda groove to it

there's a bluebird on some barbed wire
there ain't no clouds only blue sky
and i got flowers in my garden
yeah it's lookin' like a beautiful day
so I was thinkin' i'd go walkin'
down the dirt road maybe stop and
smell the roses take it easy
yeah it's lookin' like a beautiful day

beautiful day yeah yeah
beautiful day
ain't it beautiful
beautiful day yeah yeah
beautiful day

lay the top down take a long ride
that'll be me wavin' goodbye
to whatever used to get me
yeah it's gonna be a beautiful day
beautiful day yeah yeah

beautiful day
ain't it beautiful
beautiful day yeah yeah
beautiful day
`cause it's all good
feelin' alright
I got it made in the shade
It's a beautiful day

don't tell me that it's rainin'

I got no room for complainin'
it's only weather it don't matter
it's gonna be a beautiful day

beautiful day yeah yeah
beautiful day
ain't it beautiful
beautiful day yeah yeah
beautiful day
`cause it's all good
feelin' alright
I got it made in the shade
It's a beautiful day

tall in the saddle

mondo zen music/nashville geographic/ascap
Sam and I were doing a writers night with our buddy John Tirro in Knoxville, TN a couple years back…John played this song and I just fell in love with it. I asked John if he wouldn't mind if I recorded it someday…I thought it was so perfect for this album…the last verse still makes me cry seein' as I got a good (awesome) mare named jane who I'm in awe of everyday…John and Lisa are both incredibly gifted songwriters as well as artists…this tune reminds me of all the incredible horse folks I've met out on the road over the years, they really do inspire me…yikes, all this talk is tellin' me I gotta get out and ride, it's a beautiful day!!!

so you've been on the trail a good while
you're worn out and weary from many a mile
but you don't let it show
you set your eyes on the miles left to go

you're tall in the saddle
you keep your head high
and your heart just as open as the prairie is wide
you're tall in the saddle when you ride

who can you tell all the places you've seen
an old rolled-up blanket and a dented canteen
and your pillow of stone
but you can't be weighed down by the things you don't own

you're tall in the saddle
you keep your head high
and your heart just as open as the prairie is wide
you're tall in the saddle when you ride

don't you love the freedom
don't you love the land
and the feel of the reins in your hand

it's getting' on dark, but you've got a good mare
and she knows the way home and she'll take you there
and wherever you are
that's somethin' to show for comin' so far

you're tall in the saddle
you keep your head high
and your heart just as open as the prairie is wide
you're tall in the saddle when you ride

i started writin' this song one day while sam and i were movin' round bales from my mom's place to ours…it just started comin,' which i think is the coolest thing…i truly believe songs are gifts from God, that it ain't me, that i'm just channeling the tune in some way…funny thing about the last verse…we went to colorado a few days after we finished this song to go see our new colorado friends who are now family to us…it was a gig/vacation…we were going to sing at a friend's daughter's wedding and while we were there, i was going to get to do a photoshoot on horseback, sam was going to get to go fly fishin,' we were going to get to do a lot of cool things out there in God's country…well, while we were out in a very cool place called Horse Thief Canyon, gettin' our pictures taken by one of the coolest and most talented photographers i know, Charles Hilton, www.charliehorseimages.com, i had a really bad wreck…my friend John's horse, Eddy, stumbled and didn't recover…i quickly turned into a yard dart and ended up with one heck of a broken collarbone…luckily, it could've been worse, i'm fine, the horse is fine and we've got a very funny, (now it's funny) picture of me 'n Eddy goin' downJ i guess what i'm tryin' to say is that pain truly is part of livin' and i really believe it does make us stronger, even though, it's never fun…and oh yeah, Sam never got to go fly fishin,' so I guess we gotta get back to CO as soon as possible

everyday i count my blessins'
i'm just so glad to be alive

i do my best to learn my lessons
`cause i don't think we get to do this twice
this thing called life
this thing called life

cup a coffee on my back porch
i sit and watch a new day dawn
i don't take one thing for granted
`cause this don't last for very long
this thing called life
this thing called life

and now everyday, everyday
i wake up grateful
it's a choice i make, everyday
to keep it simple
and when come what may tries to shake my faith
at the end of the day i give it away
and lay my head down
and i wake up grateful

i know pain's a part a livin'
but it don't scare me like it did
you see i used to have this fear of failin'
but now i take a breath and dive right in
this thing called life
this thing called life

and now everyday, everyday
i wake up grateful
it's a choice i make, everyday
to keep it simple
and when come what may tries to shake my faith
at the end of the day i give it away
and lay my head down
and i wake up grateful
yeah I wake up grateful
